How we install our colourful crossings & shared spaces

Putting colour back in to the community
THB initially came up with the idea to start laying colourful patterned preform thermoplastic on road crossings as a way of enhancing the natural look of our roads.
Since conception, THB have installed over 140 colourful shared spaces and crossings nationally – transferring the drab and dreary into something fun and colourful.
Here is a breakdown of the steps involved in this process:
1) Get a Location and Design
The first step is to create a desired design with a location in mind. Once we have received the design, dimensions and location, we can provide a drawing ready for printing. Bare in mind permits may need to be acquired beforehand for the works to take place.
2) Printing and delivery
Once confirmed, the entire design is then printed directly onto thermoplastic sheets and packed into boxes. The install is then shipped and delivered to our depot.
3) Measure and Clean the Installation Area
Once an installation date has been confirmed, we will ensure the area is ready and prepared for the works. Often we may need to cleanse, dry, sweep or fix areas that have fallen into disrepair. A final measurement will be taken to ensure that the install will fit within the dimensions.
4) Apply Adhesive
The operatives will then evenly apply a specialised primer in preparation for the thermoplastic sheets. This ensures adhesion to the road surface.
5) Installation
The preformed thermoplastic sheets are then laid in the out in order to make the desired pattern/design. Once correctly laid out, the install is then bonded to the surface through heat. Typically, we use an industrial heater that evenly applies heat to the material and surface until adequately
