Surfacing & Drainage - M2 Motorway
Background
THB were contracted to install new asphalt surfacing in a part hand-lay and part machine-lay. We installed a base, binder and surface course, an inverted camber for drainage in the central reservation and a new vehicular crossover surface. We also installed a new concrete sub-base alongside a precast surface water channel.
Planing
We utilised our 1.0m planer to install step detail tie-ins for the new asphalt [165tn total]. We swept and cleaned the surfaces with our sweepers, ready for the new asphalt to be laid.
Surfacing
Using our 800 and 1303 pavers, we laid 1189tn of asphalt, which consisted of an inverted camber drainage channel, new vehicle crossover and surface water channel tie-in.
Concrete
We installed 65m3 of c8/c10 concrete to tie into the new precast drainage channel. The project was completed in one day, and crack inducers were installed every 3m.
Objectives
- Provide a cost-effective method of maintenance
- Implement a preventative structure to maintain a long-term solution
- Resolve future drainage issues
- Install a reliable concrete sub-base alongside a precast concrete surface water channel
- Install brand-new vehicular crossover surface
- Install base, binder and surface course
Challenges
- Short notice for mobilisation
- Changing the scope of works
- Complex working environment
- Complex machine lay with inverted camber
- Multi-disciplines required – Planing, Surfacing, Ironwork adjustment, large concrete pour
Outcome
We completed extensive surfacing and drainage work, resolved all issues, implemented preventative methods and provided a long-term solution, enhancing the road’s durability and safety. We finished the job within the estimated time under a strict work programme.
